Throughout the school, pupils are encouraged to explore science and learn about the world around them.
From studying the changing seasons during the year in Reception through to the world of astronomy in Year 6, the elements of simple scientific concepts are introduced to all. The aim is to encourage children to observe what they see around them and question the workings of their own surroundings
The teaching of science is broken down into five main sections: nature, chemistry, physics, biology and astronomy. These elements are gradually seen to merge into one another and children are able to see how these interrelations occur within their daily lives, often relating their understanding to areas from their design technology lessons.
The Infants look at subjects that are close to them, exploring the natural world through nature walks and farm visits. Practical lessons help cement simple concepts such as floating and sinking as well as supporting the development of analytical minds.
As the children move into the Junior school, time is spent introducing them to sounds and vibrations as well as light and other radiation. The human body is studied to explain the working of muscles and the key organs and further time is devoted to understanding the basic concepts of biology. Chemical principles are introduced to explain separation and reaction techniques, and the study of forces, electricity and energy provides the first steps in physics. Finally, the scientific horizon at the school is extended to the solar system and beyond to place our humble planet in its astronomical perspective.
