Year 2 - Wind Powered Vehicles

In this project children are introduced to the idea of using a natural force to power a vehicle.

Children are shown toys/artefacts that use wind power. They discuss how they move and then are asked to draw a toy, label the different parts and indicate how wind makes it move.

They are shown techniques for holding axles to enable them to turn and discuss possible difficulties. They discuss the importance of size for the sail.

Children are asked to think carefully about their ideas, to collect materials and tools that they think they will use and then encouraged to make well constructed and stable structures. They then discuss what they have donw and evaluate how well the toy works in relation to their design criteria.

Year 4 - Making a Summer Sandal

In this project children learn how sandals are designed for different purposes and people. Children are introduced to the project by looking at a collection of summer sandals and investigate the construction of footwear.

Children learn about making accurate patterns, templates and detailed working and drawings. They write a plan or flow chart to show the sequence of making. They develop making and finishing skills to enhance the quality of their sandals. Attention is focussed on the fabrics and materials used for the soles and inner/outer layers.

The children learn to evaluate their products critically and identify what to do to improve them. They discuss the suitability of the sandals for different users, their appearance, function, cost and safety.
