Children are prepared for entry at 11+ to all local independent schools as well as the maintained sector. The school works closely with both pupil and parents to choose the right school for each child; whether that be to gain a scholarship at a public school or to have a confident outlook to take to their local secondary school.
Preparation for secondary school entrance examinations begins in Class 6 (Year 5) in the form of verbal and non-verbal reasoning lessions. In Class 7 (Year 6) the children are particularly encouraged to be independent when researching topics. In PHSE they look at what to expect when moving school and discuss difficult issues such as “saying the right thing” and how to tackle bullying. 11+ and SATs papers are used to help practise and improve exam technique.
At the beginning of Class 7, the Headmaster Mr Donald speaks to all parents personally with regard to their senior school applications and an individual programme is prepared for each pupil according to their chosen schools. Parents must inform staff by the Easter of Class 6, if they are considering taking the grammar school entrance exams that occur in September or October of their final year. Extra revision lessons are added into the end of the Christmas holidays of Class 7, as some independent school entrance exams fall at this time.
